Phantom Menace Vs Attack of the Clones Part 2.

Here is part 2 of my Phantom Menace Vs. Attack of the Clones Film Versus. Click Here for part 2 of the Versus.

Overall Action
The Phantom Menace: Other than the two action scenes listed above, the Phantom Menace included a very cool opening scene of the Jedi fighting the basically helpless droids in the Trade Federation capital ship. Later, the fight to take back the Naboo's throne room was fun, however the Gungan battle was not that great. It really could have been a well made action scene, but Jar Jar had to ruin it with unnecessary humor.

Attack of the Clones: Jango Fett's and Obi-Wan's fight on Kamino was cool and really the first time that a Jedi vs. Bounty Hunter battle was shown. Both the execution fight and the Jedi battle in the Geonosis Arena were awesome. Never before has this many Jedi have been in the same fight and then the arrival of the Clones was great.

Verdict: Attack of the Clones: Attack of the Clones take an easy victory in this round. The action is just all around superior and more impressive.

Remember the winner of these following categories means that it was less negative to the film than the other one it is compared to.

Worst Aspect
Jar Jar Binks Vs Bad Romance

Jar Jar Binks: While I dislike his character less that most, he is probably the worst thing to happen to the Star Wars universe since the Holiday Special, actually he is probably worse since people remember him. I would really like to know what George Lucas was thinking when he created Jar Jar. Basically he is the most unnecessary and pointless character in the Star Wars universe, never will understand why he was in it. Upon this recent viewing of the Phantom Menace he annoyed me ever more.

Bad Romance: With Anakin's infamous description of sand and the many other poorly written lines of dialogue, it easily the worst aspect of Attack of the Clones. Although I found it slightly more tolerable than I expected upon this recent viewing, it was still poorly written and delivered.

Verdict: Bad Romance: Jar Jar is present almost throughout the film, while the romance only ruins about 15 minutes of the film. As much I hate to say it, the romance parts were not quite as bad as Jar. (this is coming from a guy who hates an over enphasis on romance in any movie)

Worst Anakin
Jake Lloyd Vs Hayden Christensen

Jake Lloyd: While some of his performance could be attributed to his young age, Lloyd should have never been casted in the role to start with. He was annoying at some points and they probably should have casted an older actor for the role.

Hayden Christensen: Christensen was also miscast as Anakin he whined a lot and was kind of the creep with stalker like qualities. Although he did play a legitimately awkward teenager relativity well.

Verdict: Tie: While Lloyd was definitely worse, however he had less screen time than Hayden, therefore it was a tie.

 Overall
Illustration depicting various characters of the film, surrounded by a frame which reads at the top "Every saga has a beginning". In the background there is a close-up of a face with yellow eyes and red and black tattoos. Below the eyes are a bearded man with long hair, a young woman with facepaint and an intricate hat, three spaceships, a short and cylindrical robot besides a humanoid one, a boy wearing gray clothes, a young man wearing a brown robe holding a laser sword, and an alien creature with long ears. At the bottom of the image is the title "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" and the credits.Film poster. A young man is seen embracing a young woman. A man holds a lightsaber. In the foreground, there is a man wearing a suit.
Verdict: Attack of the Clones: If you asked me this question a few week ago I definitely would have said the Phantom Menace, however after this recent viewing I have concluded that Attack of the Clones was more enjoyable and the Phantom Menace is my least favorite of the six Star Wars films. The action, acting, and concept, were all better in Attack of the Clones compared to the Phantom Menace. Which is your favorite of these two movies? Please vote below. Because these two are so close in ranking for me, there is no "right" answer and I cannot disagree if you like the Phantom Menace more. While these two are my least favorite of the Star Wars Saga, as a Star Wars fan I still enjoy both very much despite their flaws.

  1. Great post! :) I agree, the romance in the second film was pretty annoying(though I tend to skip it). I also agree, the action in AotC was definitely more exciting and better done :)

  2. These are both my least favorite films, however, going from my original reactions to both movies when I first saw them, I enjoyed The Phantom Menace more and was actually disappointed in Attack of the Clones. While Jar-Jar is almost unbareable, I adored seeing Obi-Wan as a young man for the first time and I quickly learned to love Qui-Gon very much. Even though Obi-Wan is a main character Attack of the Clones, I like him the least in that movie, and Anakin is so annoying throughout the entire film that I simply can't like the movie. At least the Anakin in TPM was a cute little boy, even with poor acting, at least he wasn't an annoying jerk. :D

  3. I agree about the Phantom Menace, it is definitely the least favorite of the 6 Star Wars films and the character of Jar Jar Binks is probably the annoying thing that ever come out on the franchise.

  4. Phantom Menace is my very favorite Star Wars movie. One wonderful story with a beginning, middle and end. I thought that young Anakin was at very least cute and Jar Jar isn't that bad. I am very disapointed in the second Anakin. He is creepy, tempermental and basically has no hero characteristics. In Phantom menace Qui-gon brought professionalism, sacrafice and good old Eam Nelson wise-old-mentoring to the movie.
(P.S. The Anakin/Padme romance is the worst idea to come out of Star Wars. How could poor Padme have a romance with that nice little kid from Tattoine? And why did he become a seriouslly unstable teen nutjob?)
(P.P.S. When the jedi all stood in the arena after the "Rescue" to get shot down it calls to mind a Princess Leia quote. "Some rescue. You mean you didn't have a plan for getting out?")
